In this article, we'll answer some of the most frequently asked questions about Seiko Kinetic watches!
What is a Kinetic watch?
Our Kinetic watches are automatic watch models developed by Seiko in the 1980s that use the wearer's kinetic energy to power and charge their mechanism without the need for batteries.
More specifically, a Kinetic watch movement consists of a rotor, the oscillating weight housed in the watch case. With each movement of the wrist, this rotor turns and activates a micro-generator that generates electricity.
This electricity is stored in a small built-in rechargeable batterywhich then powers the watch.
The difference with a classic automatic watch
Whereas for a classic automatic watch, energy is stored in a mainspring which requires manual winding if not worn regularly.
Our Kinetic watches can retain their charge for several months when not in usethanks to the rechargeable battery. This means you can leave your Kinetic watch aside for a while and find it always on time when you wear it again.
What's more, the Kinetic watches offer the precision of a quartz watch without the need for regular battery replacement. This makes it a particularly eco-friendly and practical watch. The movement of your wrist not only keeps the watch running, but also prolongs its life. rechargeable battery.
How do I recharge my Kinetic watch?
Seiko Kinetic watches load automatically with the natural movements of your wrist when you wear the watch. But if your timepiece remains inactive for a long period, it may need to be fully recharged. The easiest way to do this is to turn your wrist widely and regularly for a few minutes until you feel a slight resistance in the rotor. You can also gently move the watch up and down for 30 seconds.
Some Kinetic models are supplied with a charger which allows you to charge your watch without wearing it. Simply place the rotor side of the watch down on the connected charger. A full charge takes around 2-3 hours, depending on the model.
Finally, you can manual loading the Kinetic by turning the crown clockwise 300 to 400 turns. This option is only intended for emergency recovery of some of the watch's energy.
Which Seiko Kinetic watch battery?
Unlike traditional quartz watches, Seiko Kinetic watches do not use disposable batteries. They come with a small rechargeable battery supplied in the box. The capacity of the Kinetic battery depends on the watch model. On the 5M watch of the 1980s, the battery was 1.2 mAh. In recent generations, the voltage has been increased to 3.2 mAh (at 3.7 V). The Kinetic batteries have a lifespan of around 5 years before needing to be replaced.
Depending on the version, energy is stored in capacitors or supercapacitors. The service life of these kinetic energy capacitors is around twenty years. Please note that we do not recommend opening your Kinetic watch. to replace the battery yourself, as this could damage the electronic components. Preferably a Seiko-approved watchmaker.
